The Journey From Dressmaker to Team Leader

For almost three decades, Anita Fux has helped shape the history of KELLER Pressure. From her start in production right through to becoming a team leader, she has witnessed the company’s transformation first-hand. In this interview, she talks about her unusual start, her personal development and what continues to motivate her to this day.

How did you originally come to work at KELLER Pressure?

I originally trained as a ladies’ dressmaker. At an event, I met an employee from KELLER Pressure. During our conversation, she mentioned that the company placed great value on good motor skills, a steady hand, and precision with the work.  As these qualities suited me well, she recommended that I apply. I then found out more about KELLER Pressure, applied and was hired. That was in 1997.

What was it like for you to switch from working with fabrics to sensor production?

It was, of course, a big change for me. However, I really liked the factory atmosphere right from the start. The high ceilings and large windows created a bright and pleasant work environment. I was also already used to working precisely and meticulously thanks to my training.

What has your career path at KELLER Pressure been like so far?

Until I left the company on maternity leave in 2002, I worked in production. In the summer of 2003, I returned to KELLER Pressure on a part-time basis, this time in the Automotive department in the measuring/soldering section. This reduced working hours arrangement was ideal for me as a new mum. I particularly appreciated the fact that KELLER Pressure already had its own crèche back then. This meant I could go to work with my daughter, leave her in good hands there, get on with my work and pick her up again at the end of the day. I gradually increased my hours and later moved back to the Evaluation/Testing department. In April 2018, I took over the newly created ‘Wire Soldering/Encapsulation’ section, which I was able to set up myself. The team now consists of six staff members.

What do you enjoy most about your current role?

Definitely the variety. I also like the combination of computer work and hands-on tasks. And, of course, the interaction with other staff members from different departments and roles.

Looking back on your career so far, what was an important milestone for you?

A key milestone for me was taking on the role of team leader. I wanted to take on more responsibility and was delighted to be able to take this step.

How have you found opportunities for personal development and advancement at KELLER Pressure?

I’ve had the chance to complete various in-house training courses, for example in soft soldering, sensor technology, electronics and ESD. As part of my change of role, I also attended a two-day external leadership seminar, from which I gained many valuable insights. In practice, I had already encountered a number of challenging personnel situations that needed resolving. I particularly appreciated the support provided by HR. I also find the peer learning groups at KELLER Pressure very helpful. Managers meet four times a year in small, cross-functional groups to exchange ideas. The aim is to learn from one another and gain fresh perspectives for day-to-day management.

On the topic of women in leadership roles – what do you think is fundamentally needed (regardless of KELLER Pressure) for more women to take on leadership roles?

In my experience, as a woman, you often need a bit more assertiveness. I also sometimes get the impression that women in leadership roles are scrutinised more closely and have to prove themselves more often. Many women contribute valuable ideas, but tend to be rather reserved in doing so. I think we should dare to showcase our strengths more often.

How do you find balancing work and family life in your day-to-day work? What helps you personally to strike this balance?

The flexible working hours and the company’s own crèche have really helped me to balance work and family life well. I also still greatly appreciate the flexible working hours with their very reasonable core hours.

How would you describe teamwork and the corporate culture?

Although the company has grown steadily, the atmosphere has remained very informal. We have a culture where we address each other informally and treat one another as equals.

What do you particularly value about KELLER Pressure as an employer?

I particularly value the flexible working hours and my short commute. But the free perks, such as drinks or the complimentary morning snack twice a week, are also a nice

What has been one of your best moments at KELLER Pressure so far?

One highlight for me was definitely taking on my management role in 2018.

Another fond memory dates back to the time of the company's founder, Hannes W. Keller. Towards the evening he would walk through the departments and look over the shoulders of the staff who were still there. He walked very quietly, so you hardly noticed him. He was interested in what was going on in production, would usually ask a few questions and then move on again – with his arms crossed behind his back. That memory still makes me smile today.

What motivates you to stay at KELLER Pressure and continue to develop?

I’m in the right places doing what I like to do. As someone from Winterthur, I also really appreciate the short commute. For example, I can cycle home for lunch. I also see the modernisation of recent years as a very positive development. For instance, we used to have to check stock levels manually – today we can check everything directly in the system and place orders ourselves. That’s a huge relief for us.

Why would you recommend KELLER Pressure as an employer?

Definitely because of the variety – no two days are the same. With flexible working hours, the new «Diamant» building, and the Pocket Park, a new, very attractive work environment is now taking shape.
